Jonah Hill Hopes For Johnny Depp Cameo In '21 Jump Street' Film, Responds To Online Haters
When news leaked Wednesday that "Superbad" star Jonah Hill was set to write and produce a big-screen remake of the hit '80s TV show "21 Jump Street," the fan outcry was nearly unanimous.
"Foolishness!" wrote MTV reader damianx. "Dramatic? How could this guy make it dramatic?"
Well, Jonah Hill would like to have his say.
"People on the Internet just get pissed off about everything, I realized. I don't know how anyone found out about it, but [Sony] approached me because they wanted to do a comedic version of it. But it's not like slapstick or anything like that," Hill told MTV News. "I don't want to make some sh---y movie. I wouldn't want to do it if it was gonna suck, you know what I mean? I really think it's going to be sweet."
The original Fox series, which ran for five years from 1987-1991, centered on a group of undercover cops who posed as students in high school and college. It was a genre-twisting adult drama that just happened to feature teens. And, oh yeah, one of those cops just happened to be Johnny Depp.
But fans who think Hill's take will be derivative or unoriginal don't know the first thing about the 24-year-old actor, Hill insisted.
"People expect you to do something crappy [when] adapting a TV show into a film. ... When I hear it, it seems totally unoriginal," Hill confessed. "But it's going to be — we're approaching it from an original standpoint, I'll tell you that much."
That original standpoint includes a much more comedic sensibility, Hill said. Although he was reticent with plot details, he did confirm that his "21 Jump Street" would be a flat-out comedy.
"It's going to have some of the funniest people around in it, and it's going to be really funny, I hope," he said. "Or we won't make it! If it doesn't turn out funny, I promise you, we will not make it."
That kind of control over the material comes because the project was essentially Hill's idea from the get-go, he told MTV News. In other words, "I promise you guys, it's not like the studio is saying, 'Make this crappy version of the movie,' " he said. "They were like, 'It's [you] in control,' and it's badass."
What else could Hill do to appease the fans worried over his adaptation? How about if he said it has a special role for a "21 Jump Street" veteran? Now, that vet just has to get onboard.
"We have an awesome thing for Depp, if he'll do it," Hill enthused. "I don't know if he will or not, [but] it's going to be rad!"

Tatum's Pet Groomer: "She Loved That Dog"
Tatum O'Neal's attachment to her late dog, Lena, was definitely what pushed her over the edge and on the fringe of relapsing, her dog groomer tells OK!.
Jorge Bendersky, celebrity groomer at New York Dog Spa and Hotel, and currently appearing on Animal Planet's Groomer Has It, backs up the Oscar winner's explanation that she tried to by crack cocaine because she was reeling from the death of her 16-year-old Scottish terrier.
"She loved that dog," Jorge tells OK!. "She would bring her here super-often. I have so many clients, I can see them going through stuff with their dog; it's devastating. And somebody who has the inclination, or had a path with some trouble, it could push you over the edge, more when you are attached to the dog as you are."
Tatum's devotion to Lena, who passed from cancer, knew no bounds, Jorge says.
"She always kept the dog perfect. She would bring it and pick it up herself," he reveals. "It's hard, you see what you see in the media, but the other side, you know hands-on how devoted she was with her dog. I'm used to seeing what pet owners go through when their dogs get old or sick."
Jorge last talked to Tatum a few months ago, discussing Lena's health. The 44-year-old former child star had ceased bringing Lena in due to her frail state. Though he has not spoken with Tatum, who documented her drug-addled past in A Paper Life, since Lena's passing three weeks ago, Jorge insists he saw no signs of trouble in Tatum in the past.
"I remember when we went to dinner and I asked if it was alright to mention her as my client, she would immediately answer," he says. "Or if I would invite her to an event, she couldn't come because she was in L.A., she will always answer. She was super-attentive. It's hard... Tatum's life hasn't been very easy."

Combining the D.I.Y.-attitude of the early punk years with an affectionateness for progressive rock acts of the Apostles such as Gong and Gentle Giant, the U.K. act the Cardiacs formed in late 1977 by Tim Smith, wHO quickly enlisted comrade Jim Smith to join the fledgeling outfit. The alleged fact that Jim couldn't run an tool mattered small and the band took the byname Cardiac Arrest. Their outset actual release was a single, "A Bus for a Bus on the Bus," in 1979, which they followed with a full-length cassette release the adjacent year, entitled The Obvious, under the truncated advert the Cardiacs. They periodically self-released material end-to-end the '80s, including Toy World in 1981. They landed a high profile slot opening for Marillion in 1985 which, although they had been selected by Marillion booster cable isaac Bashevis Singer Fish, proven to be a pairing that did non go down advantageously with the headliner's winnow base. In 1988, they released the LP A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, which proven to be their biggest succeeder, spawning the Top Ten indie chart lead "Is This a Life." The success was transient and the band institute itself entangled in a brief arouse when the factions of the media mistook the relationship betwixt Tim Smith and saxist Sarah Smith to be as siblings instead of man and married woman. Although their audience has never been widespread, self-proclaimed admirers of the Cardiacs include Mike Patton and Damon Albarn, wHO staged for them to open shows for Blur during 1995. The Cardiacs give birth toured regularly since their origin, fifty-fifty if their recorded output has been a piece more than erratic.
